An Introduction to Northfield Front Porch Forum (2014)

The following is a longer version of the post I sent to Northfield subscribers of Front Porch Forum. The post there was limited to 1000 characters, so I had to slice and dice some parts. Here’s what I’d hoped to say:

Hi Northfield residents!
While I know some of you and have had the chance to meet many others, I wanted to introduce myself to everybody on the Northfield Front Porch Forum and explain why I’m running to be one of your two State Representatives.
I currently serve on the Berlin Selectboard, and my fulltime day job is at Norwich where I teach computer science — my day is literally split between home in Berlin and work here in Northfield! I also serve on the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors and the Berlin Economic Development Committee. Before I came to Norwich, I spent about 15 years in information technology jobs, including at my own consulting business and in a position on the information security team at a Fortune 500 company. I believe that one of the most important steps an elected representative can take is to seek feedback from constituents and act accordingly. During my time on the Berlin Selectboard, I have made it a point to take on extra work in order to provide Berlin residents with information about what is happening in the Town, through Front Porch Forum or at in-person informal meetings I’ve scheduled over breakfast at the Wayside restaurant. They respond by telling me what concerns them, and I take those concerns back to the rest of the Board to take action. This two-way communication is crucial. As your State Representative, I will do the same for what is happening in the State House!
Here’s one of the summaries I made in 2013 that might show you what I mean: https://vermontelection.org/2013/01/19/newbills-18jan2013/
While I have received a number of endorsements, one in particular really meant a lot to me. Though he and I are not always on the same page politically speaking, my fellow Selectboard member Pete Kelley had this to say, in part:
“With all the challenges facing voters these days, it’s difficult to take the time to learn all we should about each candidate in order to make a good decision when casting our vote.  Unfortunately, supporting one party in particular instead of the individual candidates with the best qualities, capabilities, and good ideas often proves to be disappointing.
Whatever the issue, Jeremy has focused on finding solutions and providing thoughtful, informed guidance to Berlin, and he will do the same for us as a state representative.”
The rest of Pete’s endorsement and several others can be found here:
I hope that I can count on your vote on November 4th! Like many of you, I work a fulltime job and have kids to care for, so I understand the time that you give up to be a voter is precious. I hope that you’ll give me the chance to demonstrate my passion and expertise as a fresh, new voice for Northfield. You can expect me to work as hard as possible to ensure that you are heard over the lobbyists and special interests in Montpelier.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please call, text, email, or send me a message on Facebook!
